Growing up in the digital era isn’t easy.  Between phone calls, text messaging, and social media, we’re expected to be connected, engaged, or creating new content 24/7.  When we’re not plugged into our phones, we’re rushing to meetings, running projects, coordinating social events, and networking over happy hour cocktails. If you get happier than a pig in mud when someone cancels plans and you can stay home wrapped in a blanket, bingeing on Netflix and Cheetos, you are my people. Hello, friend.

Like many millennials my life is super busy. I have a busy work schedule and manage this business, all while trying to make time to study daily, spend time with my better half, have a social life, and be by myself. Being by myself is important. Often it can get a little overwhelming as I burn both ends of the candle stick. So why don’t you just quit?! Sis, quitting is never an option when you’re a lion(ess). We rise, we grind, we rely heavily on our strong support systems and we develop ways to manage stress.

Burnout. What is it?

Psychology Today defines burnout as a state of chronic stress that leads to physical and/or emotional exhaustion, feelings of ineffectiveness, detachment, and cynicism towards your personal and/or professional life.

Burnout isn’t something that suddenly sneaks up on you, but instead gradually builds as the stress and pressure of life continue to mount.  Our constant consumption of information, obligations pulling us every which way, and the demands we place on ourselves to always be “on” and performing at high levels, can lead us down a downward spiral of exhaustion.  It’s important to be mindful of the early warning signs associated with burnout.

Some of the common signs includes //

  • chronic fatigue

  • insomnia

  • lack of concentration

  • increased illnesses

  • loss of appetite

  • anxiety

  • depression

  • feelings of hopelessness

  • irritability

  • pessimism

Burnout just doesn’t go away on its on.  Like everything in life, you have to work at making deliberate changes in your life to reduce/manage the stress so that you can get back to living your best life!

5 Steps I took to overcome burnout.

1. Be Proactive // The biggest part of adult-ing is realizing life doesn’t just happen to you, rather its a series of choices you make that determine your outcome.  Every day we get to choose joy over constant worry, decisiveness over indecision, and who we let put baby in a corner ( in the words of the infamous Keith Sweat…”noooobody”).  We choose our perspectives on life, who we associate with, and what opportunities we take or let go.  Because we are faced with a million choices a day, its vital that we are proactive in protecting our time, space, and energy.  Be mindful of what fuels you, drains you, and when its time to take a step back. Look for your return on investment. Do more of the things that add value to your life, and cut the things that cause you stress and anxiety.  Learning to protect your magic is a huge part of self care and personal growth.

2. Know that you are a bad*** // Own it. Period. Basing your self worth on how far you are in comparison to those around you is a silly practice and complete waste of time.  Find confidence in yourself and your ability to handle your business at your own pace.  Living in constant competition and comparison of your growth in relations to others only causes internal turmoil and stress.

3. Take a mental health day, what are you saving all that time for anyway? // Take days off, go on vacation. Decompress, recharge, and come back stronger.

4. Unplug // We are constantly being fed loads of information from tiny screens.  Take time to unplug from the cell phone and reconnect with the world around you.  Don’t worry, it will all still be there when you get back.

5.  Learn to say no, unapologetically //  It is okay to cancel plans or turn down projects that you can’t dedicated 100% of your effort towards, especially if it means keeping your sanity. The hardest part of being a go getter is knowing when to take a step back. When you’re so use to the “rise and grind” lifestyle, this can really be a struggle.  There is a fine line between managing stress and maximizing productivity. Learn to set daily priorities and categorize your tasks. If you realistically cannot accomplish something today, do not add it to a to-do list but actually schedule it on the calendar for another day.  Which brings me to to-do list. Stop making thousands of to-do list.  There’s sticky notes everywhere, Mary Jane!!!! You’ve done nothing but overwhelm yourself. Instead, create one master list for the month, then break that master list into scheduled tasks to complete throughout the month. This and not over scheduling yourself will help reduce the stress and allow for better planning and time management. Ish will actually get done! Glory!

Know that you can do all things, but you can’t do them effectively when you are exhausted, stressed, and your plate runneth over. Take the time to tend to your mental health and always remember to protect your magic!
